Vidic visited a hospital on Tuesday and missed the match between Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

Ferdinand agrees a new deal

Sir. Alex Ferguson has confirmed Rio Ferdinand is on the verge of signing a new contract with Manchester United.

The 29-year-old's representative, Pini Zahavi, had revealed the defender has agreed a new five-year deal, believed to be worth £ 130,000 a week.

And Ferguson said: "He is on the point of signing a new contract and we are happy with that."

"We always try to get players on longer contracts so we are not chasing things. Rio has been fantastic this season."

Signed from Leeds for a British record £30m in 2002, Ferdinand has become the key figure in United's defence and has formed an excellent partnership with Nemanja Vidic.

He has two years remaining on his current contract and talks over an extension were planned for the summer.

Zahavi believes it may not be his last contract at Old Trafford, and that Ferdinand may even go on to surpass the remarkable achievement of AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini, who is still playing at 39.

"I believe he can play longer than Maldini - and they believe so at Manchester United as well," Zahavi said.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I'll be Champions League King

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed his desire to lead United to Champions league glory this season, like in 1968 and 1999.

"Many times on television I've watched United winning the Champions league in 1999", said Ronaldo, "It looked incredible and It's something I want to do as well".

"I agree with Sir. Alex that United should have won it more than twice. This is a fantastic club with a great players and a great fans. It's a biggest club in the world".

"We have the players to win the European Cup this year, we have the experience and we have the team. So we must have a great chance".

"It's a fantastic competition and every one of the lads wants to win the Champions League and go down in history at United."

After netting his 36th goal of the season in Rome on Tuesday night, Ronaldo could to become only the third player in United's history to reach the 40-goal mark in a single campaign. With six games left in the Premier League and potentially another four in Europe if United go all the way to the final in Moscow, it is hard to see Ronaldo failing to break the 40-goal barrier.

"At the moment the team is brilliant, everyone is so confident. I feel the team is more mature and I'm more mature, too."

"We know that there is a big difference between the Champions League and the Premier League. But the way we are playing right now, we feel we can win both of them."
