Chelsea reportedly face competition from Liverpool in the race to sign Marseille defender Cesar Azpilicueta this summer.
Chelsea are keen on bringing in a new right-back this summer following the recent departure of Jose Bosingwa and have been linked with Azpilicueta for some time.
The 22-year-old is one of a number of full-backs who have been linked with Chelsea in recent weeks, but it is believed the Blues have stepped up their interest in recent days after Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy indicated he wanted to join Newcastle.
But according to La Provence, Liverpool are also keen on signing Azpilicueta, while Newcastle could also become contenders should they not finalise a deal for Debuchy.
Chelsea were linked with Azpilicueta during the January transfer window and the Spaniard earlier this month admitted he may have to join a bigger club if he is to play for Spain.
Speaking to Sportmag recently, Azpilicueta said leaving the Stade Velodrome could be the best option if he is to earn a call-up to Vicente del Bosque's squad.
"My dream is to play for the national team," said Azpilicueta, who is valued at around £7million.
"I want to play for a club that allows me to achieve this goal.
"This year we [Marseille] played in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and that’s not bad in terms of international level.
"If however, we had been the champions this year, it would have been easier for me, which is a shame. But it is like that, that’s the reality and we must accept this."
