The Real Madrid star is out of contract at the end of the season and an extension on his deal looks unlikely.
And Brendan Rodgers wants Alonso, who Liverpool sold for £30m in 2009, back at Anfield.
Madrid already look to be planning for life without Alonso by lining up a move for Chelsea midfielder Ramires.
Sources claim Real would be willing to sell Alonso for a token fee in January to avoid him leaving on a free.
Liverpool have a policy of signing young talent but Rodgers will look for special dispensation from Anfield chiefs to lure back the 31-year-old Spaniard.
Alonso enjoyed five memorable years at Liverpool after signing from Real Soceidad in 2004. He won the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005 and the FA Cup a year later.
The Spain international, who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea, is currently on the sidelines with a broken metatarsal.
A possible reunion with Steven Gerrard would delight the Liverpool skipper, who admitted he was devastated when Alonso was sold.
